The Beirut Memorial & The 911 Memorial

The Beirut memorial honors the 241 American peace keepers killed on 23 October 1983 during the barracks bombing in Beirut Lebanon. The loss of US casualties was: 220 Marines, 18 Sailors, and 3 Soldiers. The total casualties caused by the bombing was 305. A total of 58 members of the French military and six civilians, died during the attached.

The 9/11 Memorial includes a beam from the Twin Towers, presented by police and firefighters of New York to the first troops deployed in the global war on terror. The monument honors the connection between the 343 New York City Firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and the Marines who fought during the conflict in Iraq. the low granite marker contains a bronze plaque with the commemoration, connecting the ”leather helmets” (the fire fighters) with the “leathernecks” (the Marines) the image on the left side of the plaque depicts the fire fighters rising the American flag at Ground Zero and the image on the right side of the plaque depicts the Marines raising the flag over Iwo Jima. A portion pf the tower’s steel rest atop the granite stone. The Beam is located between the Beirut Memorial and Entry Wall to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The Memorials are located at Lejeune Memorial Gardens located outside the gates of Camp Gilbert H. Johnson which is a satellite camp of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune located in Jacksonville, NC. The memorial was officially dedicated on October 23, 1986.
